Samsung Gear VR

I finally had the chance to try a Samsung Gear VR at CES. I have to say I was very impressed! The screen resolution was noticeably higher than the DK2. Colors looked good. Field of view looked good. The head tracking was very smooth. This is certainly the best cell phone based HMD available today. Most others are garbage. It might even be the best consumer HMD after DK2.

I demoed a game in a Samsung booth that was in 3rd person. I prefer first person views for this type of VR HMD but the overall experience was well thought out.

I would really really like to pick one up. The only thing holding me back is the real price. Total cost, if you don’t own a Samsung Galaxy Note 4, is over $1k. That’s a tough one. If I could hook it to a PC then I would have already bought it. The fact that it’s tied to a VR app store and cost $1k… I just can’t do it.
