The thought keeps coming to my mind, and I’m sure others as well, why doesn’t Oculus keep the Rift DK2 around as a low end HMD.
It’s considerably cheaper at $350, has wide support, and is already available in mass quantities. Clean up the support a bit so it’s more plug and play and they have an answer to their low cost HMD question. The Gear VR doesn’t fit the bill when it needs a phone at $800 and then the headset at $99. Even if you buy the Gear VR argument, it’s still not a PC solution. Better yet, take the DK2 and update it with the Note 4 display and sell it at 1/2 the price of the Rift CV1. That would be a really nice HMD and still better than most out there today.
